SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Several school employees have been calling an adult telephone chat line while on the job, with one talking for as long as 80 hours during the past four months, Mayor Charles Ryan said Thursday.

In a recent review of phone records, Ryan says he’s found that at least 40 phones were used to call the Raven chat line. Most of the calls were made from schools, but the mayor said his ongoing investigation may lead to other buildings and city departments.

Ryan said he’s not sure how many people have been making the calls, but one school department employee has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a hearing. Two more employees are expected to be placed on leave in the coming days, he said.

The Raven is the same chat line that was called by Stephen Pegram, an aide to Ryan who police say was killed in March by a man he met through the service.

Ryan said there is no connection between the Pegram case and the current investigation.

Ryan said the chat line is “full of pornography of all sizes and shapes.”

“I don’t think there’s any of the Discovery Channel on there,” Ryan said.

The mayor said he’s more concerned that the calls are being made on city time than he is about what’s being discussed.

“If they’re going to spend time watching a National Geographic show when they should be working, that’s not going to be tolerated,” Ryan said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Regan said Ryan “passed information along” regarding the telephone calls, but would not say whether his office will conduct a criminal investigation.
