NORWAY – A collision of a motorcycle and a van Wednesday night on Paris Street put a man in the hospital with a broken bone and extensive bruising, Norway police Officer James Labbe said.
Michael B. Stevens, 42, of Paris was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, then transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with multiple trauma, according to a Norway hospital spokesman.
Two of the van’s passengers, Billy Noble, 21, and Heather Nurmi, 18, sought treatment at Stephens Memorial and were released the same evening, the spokesman said.
Reached at home Thursday afternoon, Stevens said he was released from Central Maine Medical Center that morning. With his right pelvic bone broken and extensive bodily bruising, he said, he was in a great deal of pain.
“I ain’t gonna be doin’ much,” Stevens said. His 1982 Harley-Davidson was totaled in the accident, he added.
The driver of the van, Shawn A. Mason, 18, of Otisfield, and a third passenger who is a minor did not seek treatment, the spokesperson at Stephens Memorial said.
Labbe said that when he arrived at the scene around 9:20 p.m., Mason had already driven Stevens to the hospital in his van.
Labbe said accounts of the accident provided by Mason, the van’s passengers and Stevens were consistent.
Stevens was driving his motorcycle north on Paris Street, Labbe said, when he slammed into the side of Mason’s 1994 Chevrolet van, which was turning left onto Green Street.
Labbe said Mason told him he had mistaken the moving motorcycle for a yard lamp.
Mason thought “the motorcycle was like a lamp in somebody’s front yard but when he realized what it was it was too late,” Labbe said.
Labbe guessed that the van sustained around $3,000 in damage. The impact of the motorcycle made a hole in the side of the van, cracked the windshield, blew out both right rear windows, jammed the rear side door shut so that the passengers had to get out through the front, and blew out the right rear tire. The damage was “pretty extensive,” he said.
