NORWAY – Gardner C. Stone, 88, of Mechanic Falls died Saturday at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in East Poland, May 15, 1917, the son of John H. and Ada E. Mixer Stone. He attended the Minot Corner School and graduated from Edward Little High School, Class of 1935. He also attended the Concord College of Business in Concord, N.H., in 1938. A World War II Army veteren, he served with the 406 Eng. Co. attached to the 23rd Hdq. Special Troops, under the 12th Army Group.

Before entering the service, he worked for a short time at the South Portland Shipyard.

On June 1, 1940, he married Viola R. Raymond in the Minot Corner Methodist Church. After returning from the service he was employed by New England Telephone Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He was a 65-year member of Tyrian Lodge 73 AF & AM, a member of St. Andrews Royal Arch Chapter, and was past patron of Dwinal Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Viola, of Mechanic Falls; three daughters, Evelyn and her husband, John Davis, of Poland, Carol and her husband, Clarence Allen Jr., of South Paris, and Valerie and her husband, John Emery, of Mechanic Falls; five grandchildren, John Davis Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, and their son, Spencer Stone Davis, of Mechanic Falls, Craig Allen and his wife, Dawn, of Jessup, Md., Christopher Allen of South Paris, Robert Hackett and his fiance, Trina Downing of Mechanic Falls, and Stephen Hackett of Mechanic Falls. These grandchildren were “Gramps'” pride and joy. Gardner is also survived by a sister-in-law, Gracie Stone, of Auburn.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Stone.
