MONMOUTH – As a way to raise money for the medical needs of Darcy Wakefield, a 34-year-old Cape Elizabeth woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” the Theater at Monmouth will donate $11 per ticket sold from its July 9 show to Girls Kick ALS.

Girls Kick ALS is a nonprofit organization formed by Wakefield’s friends in 2004, shortly following her diagnosis, to raise money for Wakefield’s ALS-related needs. She is formerly of Livermore and is the daughter of John and Nancy Wakefield of Livermore.

The 7:30 p.m. play is Shakespeare’s comic romp, “Taming of the Shrew.” Tickets are $30 and can be reserved by calling the Monmouth Theater box office at 933-9999 and specifically requesting seats “for the ALS fund-raiser night” by June 20.

ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, usually leaving people paralyzed, with their minds intact, within three to five years after diagnosis.

Although 30,000 Americans of both genders and all races and ages have the disease, with 5,600 new cases being diagnosed each year, there is no cure or treatment.

Girls Kick ALS is dedicated to funding the equipment and services Wakefield needs as she battles ALS. Since its inception in 2004, fund-raising events organized by Girls Kick ALS, including a fund-raiser at Monmouth Theater last summer, have financed the building of a wheelchair ramp at her home, a wheelchair, a page-turner and personal healthcare attendance.
