NORWAY – Maine veterans who earned a Purple Heart in combat, including several soldiers who served in the Iraq War, will meet Saturday for a picnic and a chance to talk during the second annual Dug Out Party.
Hosted by Grant and Rosemarie Leonard, the party will be held at the couple’s Greenwood Road farm and orchards.
The Leonards’ daughter, a chef, will cook for the soldiers and their families. There is no cost.
The party begins at 1 p.m. at the Leonard farm, which is three miles in on the Greenwood Road off Route 118.
As Grant Leonard, a World War II Purple Heart recipient, said recently, “There will be no cost, no booze, no politics and no religion” discussed at the picnic.
Leonard said the get-together is called the Dug Out Party because that’s what soldiers called foxholes they dug during combat.
Purple Heart recipients from Cumberland, Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties already have signed up for the party, but Leonard said he expects veterans from throughout Maine to attend.
People are being asked to bring their own chairs.
