RUMFORD – A Mexico teenager injured in an accident in Rumford late Friday was released from a Lewiston hospital Tuesday.
Sheri Smith, 15, was one of six people injured in crashes in Rumford and Hanover over the weekend.
Three other teens involved in the Rumford accident were treated at Rumford Hospital and released Friday night, a police report stated.
Investigating Patrolman Douglas Maifeld said the crash occurred at 10:10 p.m. on Isthmus Road. Eric Hamann, 18, of Peru, was driving a 1997 Ford Probe beyond the speed limit when a deer entered the road, Maifeld said. Hamann swerved left, tried to overcorrect to the right and lost control of the car, which left the road and hit a tree.
Emergency responders found Hamann and his three teenage passengers “laying on a lawn” across the street from the totaled car, Rumford firefighter Donald Coulombe said.
Maifeld said Hamann injured his right ear and head. Alyssa Giberson, 16, of Mexico, reported injuries to her stomach, and Kayla Giberson, 15, of Rumford, reported injuries to her knees, he added.
Smith, the only one who wasn’t wearing a safety belt, suffered head injuries, Maifeld said.
Hamann was issued a summons on charges of driving to endanger and having a passenger less than 18 not wearing a safety belt. He is to be arraigned on Aug. 2 in Rumford District Court.
Oxford County Sgt. Christopher Wainwright said Tuesday that the Hanover accident occurred at 4:51 p.m. The identities of the two women involved were not available Tuesday, pending a report by Oxford County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Hill.
Med-Care paramedic Rob Renander said the female driver of a mid-sized car had apparently fallen asleep.
“She swerved off the road, went into a ditch, went airborne, and flipped over a couple of times. The car landed upright on its wheels,” Renander said. She got herself out then pulled her mother out.
“Both were wearing their seat belts. This was one of those cases where seat belts saved lives,” he said.
Both women were taken to Rumford Hospital, and the daughter was later flown to CMMC.
