FARMINGTON – Betty Ann Wadsworth, 81, of Farmington, died Thursday, June 9, at Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center, after a brief illness with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. She died surrounded by her family, and by the caring staff of Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center. Prior to moving to Farmington in April 2005, she had been a resident of Lewiston, N.Y., for the past 46 years.

She was born April 6, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Andrew and Laura Messner.

She married her husband of nearly 62 years, Donald A. Wadsworth, on Oct. 2, 1943, in Warren, Pa.

She was a graduate of Warren High School and Hoff’s Business College, both in Warren, Pa.

During her early married life, she worked as a clerk in the courthouse of Warren, Pa. Later she worked for Bausch and Lomb in Wellsville, N.Y., but most of her life she devoted herself to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

When it came to family, she was noted for her generosity and attendance at reunions, weddings, graduations and school events anywhere in the country. She attended the college graduation of every grandchild and desperately wanted to attend the college graduation of her grandson, Timothy Shumway, in June 2006. She will be there in spirit.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three children; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. They are Carol (Wadsworth) and Alan Shumway of Farmington, and their children, Sarah Shumway of New York City, Carrie Shumway, currently serving with the Peace Corps in Nicaragua, and Timothy Shumway of Farmington, where he is currently attending the University of Maine; Donald and Diane Wadsworth of Northfield, N.J., and their children, Drew Wadsworth and Jennifer Grady of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Dione and Matt Ammann of Eagle Harbor Township, N.J., and their children, Connor and Riley; Anna (Wadswoth) and Fred Snyder of Medina, N.Y., and their children, Kenneth Snyder and Kelly Sunday of Elyria, Ohio, and his daughter Alexis, and James and Marti Synder of Lockport, N.Y., and their children, Cullen and Tate.
