TOWNSHIP 14 (AP) – Family members on Wednesday found the body of a fisherman who had been missing and presumed drowned for a month.
“I have good news and bad news,” Tim Craig said as he approached the Cathance Boat Landing in his bass boat. He had been looking for his cousin, 55-year-old Jim Craig of Meddybemps, for weeks. “Actually it’s all the same, we found him.”
Jim Craig had been missing since May 7, when he and another cousin, Tommy Hiland, 57, of Princeton, set off in a canoe for a fishing trip on Cathance Lake.
Hiland’s body was found on Mother’s Day, washed ashore near his battered canoe.
Family members said the water was calm when the pair left, but the winds picked up late that afternoon and the lake became choppy.
For days after the accident, the Maine Warden Service searched the area with an airplane, boats, divers and a dog team. Family members, friends and co-workers from the mill in Bucksport from which Jim Craig had retired combed the shore.
The state search eventually was called off.
“I’m really grateful for all that the wardens have done for us,” Tim Craig said. “They’ve been A-1. I’m not disappointed in what they did or how they proceeded. They did a hell of a job.”
