LEWISTON – Healthy Androscoggin, a community coalition, is piloting a support group for people interested in improving their cardiovascular health, including lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, by eating healthier and getting physically active.

The support group is being held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through July 26 (with the exception of July 5) at 12 High St. in the lower atrium (one level below the lobby).

Meetings are free and open to anyone interested in eating better or becoming more physically active. Meetings are held in a drop-in fashion and attendance at every meeting is not required. Free child care is provided on site.

Participants will learn about nutrition topics, such as reading food labels, choosing healthier options, altering recipes, eating healthy on a budget and will have the opportunity to taste-test many foods. Guest speakers will talk about options for physical activity. Free physical activity and nutrition resources and give-aways will also be given.

“Losing weight is hard for everyone. It’s about more than making a decision to eat better and get more physical activity. Attending a support group provides the encouragement and new skills that can help people sustain their commitment to making healthy choices,” said Jessica Begley of Healthy Androscoggin.

The Healthy Heart Awareness Support Group is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Cardiovascular Health Program through the Central Maine Medical Center Family Practice. Healthy Androscoggin’s goals are to promote good health by encouraging substance-free lifestyles, healthy eating and increased physical activity.
