LITCHFIELD – Voters here will decide Saturday whether to enact a six-month moratorium on all residential subdivisions.
Proposed to slow residential growth in what has been deemed the second-fastest-growing town in Kennebec County, the moratorium is one of many issues that will be discussed at Litchfield’s annual town meeting.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Carrie Ricker Middle School.
The moratorium will most likely be the most controversial topic based on previous meetings and public hearings, said Muriel Bonin, chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen.
In addition to considering the moratorium and next year’s municipal and school budgets, voters will also be asked if they want to increase the number of selectmen from three to five.
If approved, the change will become effective at the 2006 annual town meeting.
Voters will also consider a proposal to make the planning board an official town board according to rules set by the Maine Constitution.
Litchfield has had a planning board for many years, but it was recently discovered that the group had never been officially established.
“Somehow it came to light, so now we’d like to take care of it,” Bonin said.
