MONMOUTH – A one-man show called “Pentecostal Wisconsin” is scheduled June 18 at Cumston Hall. It’s the second presentation in a summerlong Theater at Monmouth series called “From NYC to Monmouth.”

David Greenham, TAM’s producing director, said “Pentecostal Wisconsin” is a solo comedy with original music written and performed by Ryan Paulson.

“Ryan acted here a few years ago,” Greenham said. “He’s a wonderful songwriter and storyteller – really goofy and charming. We told him if he ever had a one-man show, we wanted him back.”

Paulson’s autobiographical production has had a successful off-off -Broadway run. He says it’s “a hilarious tale of religious ecstasy and bashful Scandinavians.”

Paulson lets us in on what the religious Right is really all about as he finds God, falls hard for a sexy Swedish teenager and winds up leaving his friend Jesus standing in the church parking lot.

The 60-minute performance will be followed by a discussion of the process used to create the piece and how it was developed for the stage.

“Pentecostal Wisconsin” is directed and developed by Virginia Scott.

“We’re constantly looking to find great work,” Greenham said, noting the NYC to Monmouth Series fell into place quite easily because there are lots of New York performers who love to come to Maine.

Next in the series at Monmouth Aug. 16 is “Quinnopolis VS Hamlet” with the highly acclaimed theater company, Quinnopolis NY.

TAM also has scheduled “The Collected Mistakes of Lorne Elliot and Lorne Elliot’s Culture Shock” direct from Montreal for June 24-25, and “Black Fly Follies,” Monmouth’s annual laughfest, for July 2.

The regular Theater at Monmouth season opens in repertoire with Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” July 8 to Aug. 27. It alternates with Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” David Hirson’s “La Bête” and Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost.”

“All in the Timing” by David Ives is slated for Aug. 23; and the popular musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is scheduled for Sept. 22 to Oct. 2. “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” TAM’s children’s show, will be performed Aug. 9-26.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. For information and tickets, call The Theater At Monmouth box office at (207) 933-2952.
