HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A Lebanon egg farm will pay the state $70,075 to settle charges it put a “Connecticut Grown” label on its eggs, when the eggs really came from Maine, state officials said.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said that Mitlisky’s Egg Farm actually bought all its eggs from farms outside Connecticut and has produced no eggs at its state facility since 2001.

“Stretching the lable is a disservice to our hardworking farmers and consumers,” Blumenthal said in a written statement.

The Connecticut Grown program is meant to identify agricultural products that are grown in Connecticut. It promotes local produce.

The farm claimed when the allegations first surfaced that the problem happened when old cartons were accidentally used for out-of-state eggs.

Blumenthal said the settlement requires that the egg farm can no longer use the label on the out-of-state eggs, or use the word “farm.” The settlement includes $45,000 in civil penalties and $8,700 in profits on the eggs. The money will go into state coffers.
