Boston – For the purpose of distributing as advantageously as possible the Hebrew immigrants who arrived at this port, the Boston branch of the Baron De Hirsch committee has planned the establishment of points in the various states in New England from which places the foreigners seeking homes and employment in this country will be sent. The work has already begun in the state of Maine, which has been divided into districts, each district to have a committee of seven men. The committee has already been organized in Augusta, Belfast, Bangor, Portland, Gardiner, Auburn, Lewiston and Brunswick.

Le Mans, France – This mecca of auto racing fans was stunned today – its morgue overflowing with 77 dead and its hospitals filled with injured in the aftermath of the greatest disaster ever seen at a speed track. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon, 2½ hours after the race started. A flaming German Mercedes-Benz, driven by a Frenchman, hurtled over a retaining wall and into the crowd pressed against the barrier near the main grandstand.

Maintaining the city’s history, instituting a bikeway system and preserving scenic views along the Androscoggin River are among the proposed policies for Auburn’s Master Development Plan in the area of “open space and recreation.” Policies in this and other areas will aid in developing alternative master plans for consideration by city officials and the public. The final master plan will be utilized as a guide for Auburn’s future development.
New England Telephone Co. announced Wednesday that it will seek permission to charge its Maine customers an extra $39.5 million a year, but President Carter’s wage and price controls may soften the blow to consumers. NET, which has 390,000 Maine customers or about 75 percent of the state’s telephone service, said it will file the rate request with the state Public Utilities Commission next month.
