GREENE – Voters passed all six articles on the special meeting warrant Monday night, overturning previous decisions on property tax discounts and interest.

The tax commitment date was changed from June 27 to June 29, the day the Homestead Exemption Act becomes effective. This would eliminate the need to write several abatements, Town Manager Charlie Noonan said.

Residents agreed to withdraw a vote at the town meeting and reinitiate a 5 percent discount on real estate and personal property taxes paid in full 31 days from the commitment date. Payments are due no later than 8 p.m. Postmarks will not be accepted.

Voters also chose to overturn another decision from the annual meeting and reinstate a 5 percent interest charge on all real estate and personal property tax paid after Sept. 30. The fee starts at 4:30 p.m.

Selectmen also brought the original article regarding cemetery stone work back for clarification on what to do about a shortfall in the previous year’s maintenance contract.

Chairman Ron Grant said by not appropriating the money it would dip into the stone maintenance fund and put the town further behind in its upkeep project. The handful of attendees agreed to allow the town to raise and appropriate an additional $2,000 more than the original article to help pay for maintenance and allow the current stone repair to continue.
