Downtown Lewiston-Auburn has changed enough that city leaders need a better idea of how people get around.

“What we need to do is take a global look at the entire area and see what needs to be done to roads, to parking, to transportation,” said Greg Mitchell, Lewiston assistant city administrator.

The cities, working with the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center, are kicking off a new study of the downtown area, looking at all of the issues that determine how people get around.

The first meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. tonight at Lewiston City Hall. A second is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on June 23 in Auburn Hall.

The face of the downtown is changing, from Auburn’s Hilton Garden Inn and Tom Platz’ Great Falls Plaza office buildings to Lewiston’s Island Point and Southern Gateway projects.

“We need a better idea of how that affects the transportation system,” said Mitchell. “It’s not just cars, but downtown shuttles and rail, possibly. Also, we need to consider what we can do to make this a more walkable community.”

The study should be completed in February 2006.
