TOWNSHIP 15, RANGE 13, Maine (AP) – A 58-year-old Limestone man drowned in a weekend canoeing accident on Big Black Rapids along the St. John River, authorities said.

Robert Godfrey was in a canoe with his daughter, Danielle Ellis, when it got caught on a rock Friday evening and overturned, the Maine Warden Service said. The victim was not wearing a life jacket and did not know how to swim, officials said.

Godfrey was pulled from the water but efforts to resuscitate him failed.

The canoeing party, which included two of Godfrey’s daughters and three other women, spent the night at the remote site before walking several miles to the nearest road Saturday to get help.
