BUCKFIELD – Three attempts to raise more money than requested on the SAD 39 referendum ballot failed Wednesday.

The $5.9 million budget was passed by about 90 residents from Buckfield, Hartford and Sumner who voted at the Hartford-Sumner Elementary School.

Article 7, which asked for $635,771.90 to cover the Essential Programs and Services which the state does not cover, elicited three amendments to raise the amount.

They all failed.

One parent advocating more funding has a child with special needs going into third grade next year and wanted another teacher added.

The class of 44 has nine students in Special Education and seven in the Title I program. As it stands, there will be 22 students in each of two classrooms.

The first three articles for Region 11 vocational education funding were approved, as was Article 5 to raise $5.1 million for pre-kindergarten through 12 education.

This did not include $25,493.61 for capital projects bonds addressed in Article 6 .

Article 9 asked for $45,663 for the Adult Education program.

Residents applauded the work of the Budget Committee.
