SEBAGO, Maine (AP) Three young people were killed Wednesday in an early morning highway crash that investigators said was linked to excessive speed.

The victims were in a pickup truck that veered off Route 114 at about 12:30 a.m. and slammed into a tree, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.

An officer who spotted the truck traveling at a high rate of speed came upon the wreckage while setting off in pursuit of the vehicle.

A portion of Route 114 near Long Beach and the Standish town line was closed to traffic for hours after the accident.
