AUBURN – Kent Day Webster, 84, of 42 Hector St., Auburn, died early Saturday morning, June 11, at his home after succumbing to cancer.
He was born in Auburn, April 24, 1921, son of Ralph I. and Sadiee Curtis Webster. He grew up on the family farm on Turner Street, received his education in Auburn schools and was a graduate of Edward Little High School in 1940. He was a member of the state championship ski team and competed as a ski jumper worldwide.
After graduation, he worked as a chipper for Todd Bath Iron Works in South Portland, until August 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 1, 1942, and trained and was a member of the 10th Mountain Division. He saw action and received his Purple Heart in the Po Valley in Italy. He later served as an MP in the 12th Division in North Africa. He was honorably discharged Sept. 21, 1944.
He was brought up by a mother who was a schoolteacher, and everything was always “please” or “thank you” when he talked; he never complained of anything, he never wanted to bother anybody, but was always willing to help everybody. He was one of the most pleasant people that you could ever meet.
He was always amazed by the new technology that came along during his lifetime, but he was more amazed by nature and loved to see all of its aspects. He always loved the outdoors, especially fishing trips with his twin brother, Keith.
When he finally met his life’s match, Virginia Jordan, he also inherited a new family. He was a father figure to her children, and all of their children have always known him as “Grampy Kent,” and also the great-grandchildren.
He spent his last few years with Roland and Doreen Jordan who tried to give him back some of the care and love that he always gave so freely himself. He will be sadly missed by all, especially by Nigan, who has kept him entertained over the past few years – he always loved children, and watching them grow and learn.
He is survived by his brother, Donald Webster of Salisbury, N.C.; his nephew, Don and his wife, Betsey, of Mount Ulla, N.C.; niece, Ann and husband, Jon Rae of Denver, Colo.; nephew, Kent Webster of Arizona; his extended family, Ronald and Josephine Jordan, Robert and Cynthia Jordan of Poland, Richard Jordan of Detroit, Roland and Doreen Jordan of Auburn, Beverly and Mitch Nord of Round Rock, Texas, and Doris Jordan of Litchfield.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Sadiee Webster; his twin brother, Keith, in 2001; his love and soul mate, Virginia L. Jordan, in 1988; and her son, Rodney, in 2004.
We would like to thank the VA Administration at Togus for the care and support over the years, the nurses of M-1 at Central Maine Medical Center for the care during his many visits, Dr. Guo for her help in his battle with cancer, and for Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for his home care over the past few years, and hospice care in the end.
