ANDOVER – Residents voted 150-129 at a special election Tuesday to not grant the state the power to allow alcohol to be served in the Snow Valley Family Diner, selectmen Chairman Gerry Savitz said Friday.
Maine law mandates that it is up to the voters of each town to give the State Liquor Commission licensing authority.
It is currently illegal for any restaurant in Andover to serve alcohol.
Kristin Perham, who owns Snow Valley with her husband, Andrew, said she would not wait until next year to raise the issue with voters again. Instead, she said, she and her husband would submit a reworded petition to the state and, if the state approves it, push for selectmen to hold another special election as soon as possible.
Voters rejected two articles pertaining to the state’s liquor licensing authority on June 14. Article 4 pertained to licensing the Perhams to sell alcohol on every day except Sunday; Article 5 to authorizing the state liquor commission to license the Perhams to sell alcohol on Sundays.
