The articles and editorial regarding the Leavitt Area High School graduation were disappointing. The “message” you have sent the community does not reflect the joy and celebration of the LAHS class of 2005 and all its accomplished students. Instead, the Sun Journal chose to dwell upon the negative.

In editing the June 11 story, you left until the end of the article excerpts of speeches labored over for days, even weeks, by the commencement speakers who delivered the real messages of graduation.

What about the graduate who danced with the Portland Ballet and will go on to a college of fine arts for a career in dance? Or the graduate who has among her goals to become president of the United States. (I’d watch for this girl’s name if I were you, the Press Herald might scoop you.) How about the graduate who received a scholarship for trade school? Or the graduate who is so brilliant and talented that she can’t decide if she’ll study theater or physics, so she’ll study both? The graduate who builds houses for Habitat for Humanity? The graduate filmmaker they call “Hollywood,” who is so talented and driven that we are sure to see his name in the credits someday soon?

Please tell me why the Sun Journal didn’t write about these young adults? Is the positive not news?

The Sun Journal did not do the LAHS Class of 2005 justice. Take a second look. Share in their celebration!
