AUBURN – Charles E. “Bud” Penley, 78, of Auburn, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 16, with his loving family at his side.
Charles was born May 16, 1927, in Farmington, to Clarence and Ethelyn Penley. He was raised in Auburn and attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1947.
He was the beloved husband of Pauline Breton, whom he married on June 7, 1952.
For 53 years, they raised their six children and devoted their lives to their family and each other.
Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. After serving his country, he worked for Maineline Bus, H.P. Hood, and Canteen Service. His career was with the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as a carrier for 25 years. He retired in 1987.
He had many interests, including camping, gardening, bird watching and traveling. He also loved to go hunting and fishing with his sons. He and Pauline enjoyed many winters in Florida after his retirement. He also gave and received great joy from playing Santa Claus at Christmas.
He was a longtime member of the United Commercial Travelers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline; daughters, Mary, Katherine and her husband, Mark Adams; sons, Robert and his wife, Candace, William and his wife, Patricia, Wayne and his wife, Linda, and Patrick and his wife, Amanda; 11 grandchildren, Sarah, Laura and husband Nick, Brian, Eric, Tricia, Ellen, Rachael, Kevin, Tucker, Tanner and Olivia; his sister, Phyllis and her husband, Jack Jones; brother, Paul and his wife, Marge; sister-in-law, Irene and husband, Norm Bureau; 11 nieces and nephews; and many friends.
