AUBURN – John “Jack” P. Frena, 83, of Grove Street, Lisbon Falls, died Friday, June 17, at Clover Manor Health Care.

He was born May 13, 1922, in Durham, the son of Paul H. and Mary H. (Holan) Frena. He started school in Durham. In 1928, he moved to Lisbon Falls and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1941.

After graduation, he entered World War II, and served three years under General Patton in the 3rd Army. He was one of the “Battered Bastards of Bastone” during the Battle of the Bulge. He received several medals including two Bronze Stars.

He married the former Thelma Cornish, also a 1941 graduate of Lisbon Falls High School, in 1973.

He worked as superintendent of the Lisbon Water Department for 33 years.

Jack was a former member of Holy Family Parish in Lisbon Falls, and recently Holy Trinity. He also was a member of American Legion Post No. 66, the V.F.W. and Knights of Columbus in Lisbon.

He initiated and established the Lisbon High School Class of 1941 Scholarship in memory of the students of the Class of 1941, including those who left school before graduation to serve in World War II. This perpetual scholarship will help Lisbon High graduates for years to come.

He loved spending summers at his cottage in Harpswell, and was a very proud and patriotic veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma, of Lisbon Falls; one niece, Marsha Jones-Tannenbaum and her husband, David; two nephews, Randall R. Jones and his wife Carolyn, and John W. Jones and his wife, Star.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Coolidge and Helen Jones.
