This is in regard to the June 16 article about the proposed increase in the excise tax on beer. The article quoted Dick Pfeiffer of Gritty McDuff’s complaining that the tax increase could add $2 to the retail price of a six-pack of beer. Pfeiffer should refer to his third-grade arithmetic book.
The proposed increase would raise the tax on a gallon of beer from 25 cents per gallon to 60 cents per gallon. To me, that comes to 35 cents. Since there are 12 ounces in a beer and six beers in a six-pack, that comes to 72 ounces. A gallon contains 128 ounces; so a six-pack of beer would be 56 percent of a gallon. Doing the math, 56 percent of 35 cents comes to about 20 cents. I would assume that to be about the tax increase on a six-pack.
Yet Mr. Pfeiffer says he would be forced to raise the price of his six-pack by $2, about 10-times the amount of the new tax.
