Recently, my son was suspended from Auburn Middle School for having a knife in his possession. I arrived at the school with my husband to find that the knife in question was not one of ours. We questioned my son for three hours to finally find out that he purchased the knife at school.

What are we going to do to keep our children safe in public schools? I feel that it is time that metal detectors are put into the middle and high school. My other son didn’t understand what the fuss was all about because kids bring knives to school all the time.

As taxpayers and parents, we need to keep the schools safe. I feel, as a parent, that the schools at this time are not safe. If it was so easy for my son to purchase a knife from another student, what is next? It is a scary thought to think of how many knives or weapons are in the school without the administration knowing.

I totally agree that my child needed to be punished for this incident, but I also believe that school officials needed to find out where the knife came from when we, as parents, told them that we had never seen the knife before. We had to do our own investigating to get to the truth.

The question is, how safe are our kids, really, in the public school system, and what means are we going to take to keep them safe?
