MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – No, you don’t have to like the New York Yankees to go to New Hampshire Fisher Cats games in Manchester – deep in Red Sox country – but you do have to keep your anti-Yankee feelings, well, civil.

With the Yankees Double-A club, the Trenton Thunder, in town for seven games, Fisher Cats employees are cracking down on offensive T-shirts, abusive comments and rude chants.

“When people wear the “Yankees Bleep” shirts, we don’t tolerate that,” Fisher Cats President Shawn Smith said.

“We ask them to turn those T-shirt inside out,” he said. “If people don’t comply, we’ll give them their money back and tell them they’re welcome to leave.”

And he said they’ll also stop the game to make announcements if the typical, abusive and explicit anti-Yankee abusive chants break out.

A variety of disclaimers have been posted throughout the park and flashed on the scoreboard, reminding fans to respect each other.

“It’s very important we protect our family environment and protect the children,” Smith said. “When we had an incident and escorted people out (earlier this season), we had some families come up to us and say Thank you.”‘

Fan Bill Foti of Manchester approves. He brought his 8-year-old daughter, Christina, to Friday’s game.

“You don’t want to have to explain to your kids why a certain adult is behaving badly,” Foti said.

“You just want to enjoy the game. There’s no place for that kind of behavior.”
