COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – A van carrying 20 people skidded and overturned on a Missouri highway Sunday, killing five passengers and seriously injuring at least five others, police said.

The van was traveling east on Interstate 70 when it drifted onto the shoulder of the highway west of Columbia. The driver apparently overcorrected, causing the van to skid into the median, where it overturned several times.

Killed in the crash were three men and one woman. The gender of the fifth victim was not immediately available.

Authorities identified only one of the five fatalities: Julio Lopez-Luna, whose age and hometown were unknown.

Seventeen of the van’s occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Eleven people were seriously injured, and four others sustained moderate injuries, although hospitals provided conflicting information on their status.

Several of the van’s occupants were South American nationals from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, and did not speak English. Hospital officials used interpreters to communicate with them. Many of the injured were not carrying identification, and five of the passengers remained unidentified Sunday evening.

All of the identified passengers who were badly injured were in their teens and 20s. None of the van’s occupants had been wearing seat belts, police said.

Four of the most seriously hurt occupants were admitted to University Hospital in Columbia in critical condition. One person was listed in serious condition, and six in fair condition, hospital spokeswoman Bridgett Robbins said.

It was unclear where the van was headed.
