LISBON – Selectmen on Tuesday approved a three-year contract with Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. at a cost of just over $70 a ton. The last contract was for $61 per ton.

They also approved a total of $59,661 in year-end transfers between various accounts to balance budgets. Much of the money came from funds raised for expected insurance increases last year, Town Manager Curtis Lunt said. The town projected a 9 percent hike, but the actual rate went up only 2 percent.

The board voted to transfer a total of $11,249 from various sources into an account to be used for plumbing and boiler repairs at the MTM Community Center.

No decision was made on how a condemned building at 39 Village St. will be removed. Lunt reported he had received bids of $9,900 and $7,000 from demolition companies, and the Fire Department has offered to burn the property. Chairman Mike Bowie instructed Lunt to check with neighbors the building is to be burned.

Layne Curtis said he “was not happy” with the burning of the old Builders Supply store, when large burning embers blew over a large area and even across the Androscoggin into Durham.

A neighbor, Cheryl Hale asked, “What about all the feral cats in and around the building and a nearby camper; the neighbors are concerned.” She was assured the animal control officer would look into the matter.

Lunt will return to the next meeting with a plan for the demolition and will talk with the fire chief and neighbors about burning it. Selectmen agreed that they wanted to settle the matter expeditiously and didn’t “want it to drag on” any longer than necessary.
