LOVELL – A Lovell man pulled a loaded pistol on another driver after a road rage incident Tuesday afternoon on Route 5, Oxford County Deputy Josh Wyman said.

No one was injured, and no one has been charged, the deputy said.

John Sprague, 65, of Lovell, and Danny Rolfe, 39, of Butters Hill Road in Stoneham, were in a line of traffic waiting to be flagged through a one-lane construction area of Route 5 when Sprague passed Rolfe and the two exchanged obscene gestures, Wyman said.

They both continued north on Route 5, and when Sprague pulled his car into the post office parking lot on Route 5, Rolfe followed in his pickup and confronted him, Wyman said.

Sprague, described as weighing about 120 pounds, opened his trunk and pulled out a loaded .38-caliber handgun after seeing the heavy-set Rolfe get out of his truck, Wyman said.

Rolfe “batted it out of his hands,” Wyman said.

Sprague “couldn’t get it out of the holster very good” because he was shaking so bad, he added. The weapon had two loaded clips, he said.

A report of the incident will be sent to the district attorney’s office to determine whether charges will be filed, he said.

The state also will be asked to consider revoking Sprague’s concealed weapon permit, he added.

Also responding to the incident were Oxford County Cpl. Matt Baker, Fryeburg Police Chief Wayne Brooking and Officer Richard Murray.
