PARIS – A man accused of attempting to kill a Fryeburg doctor while burglarizing her home last fall pleaded innocent Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court.
David J. Mair, 30, of 247 Valley St. in Portland is charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, burglary and aggravated assault.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said Mair could receive up to 70 years in prison if convicted on all four charges.
Mair is accused of breaking into Dr. Mary Nash’s home at 874 Main St. early on the morning of Sept. 15 and hitting her with his fists and a wrench-like tool when she returned from a workout. With cuts on her hands and head, she escaped to a neighbor’s house to call police. She was treated at a hospital.
Mair was arrested May 30 after investigators learned DNA on a piece of evidence in the case matched his. At the time, he was about to be released from York County Jail in Alfred after serving time for violating a probation agreement in connection with an arrest March 23 by the Portland Police Department for possession of burglary tools.
Mair is being held at the Oxford County Jail in Paris, Sgt. Tammy Arsenault of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday evening. His bail is $50,000, according to a court document. Bail conditions prevent him from possessing firearms or having any contact with Nash, the document states.
John S. Jenness Jr. of Paris, the court-appointed defense attorney, has 30 days to file motions before a trial date is established.
Justice Ellen Gorman presided at the arraignment.
