LACONIA, N.H. (AP) – The flag on the Mount Washington cruise ship was at half-mast Tuesday in memory of the vessel’s longtime captain, who died during the weekend.
John Pettengill, 58, spent 40 years working on the Mount, after learning the art of sailing while growing up on Squam Lake.
He suffered a heart attack at Weirs Beach on Saturday, just outside the headquarters of the Winnipesaukee Flagship Corp.
Laconia Fire Chief Ken Erickson was the first to reach Pettengill and revived him with CPR, but he suffered a second attack on the way to the hospital and could not be revived.
Pettengill started working as a deckhand on the Mount in 1964 and worked his way to skipper.
