LEWISTON – The American Red Cross Blood Services – Northeast Division is facing an urgent need for blood donations.
Inventories of most blood types are at less than a one-day supply. A three- to five-day supply is normally considered to be an optimal level. In the United States, transfusions are needed every two seconds for transplant surgeries, trauma patients and those receiving treatment for life-threatening illnesses.
With the Fourth of July rapidly approaching, blood supplies are expected to continue to decrease since many people will be away for the holiday.
Despite this fact, blood must be available wherever and whenever it is needed for patients.
“Eligible individuals are urged to make donating blood a personal priority surrounding the Fourth of July weekend,” said Eric Lynes, account executive for the American Red Cross. “Each blood donation can help save the lives of up to three patients in need.”
The summer months are a traditionally challenging time for the American Red Cross Blood Services – Northeast Division to collect the 2,000 units of blood needed each day just to meet the basic needs of area patients.
To donate blood, people must be at least 17 years of age, 110 pounds, and be in general good health. Donors may give blood every eight weeks, or six times a year.
For additional information regarding eligibility or to schedule an appointment to donate, people may call 1-800-482-0743 or visit www.newenglandblood.org. Walk-in donors are welcome.
