Graduation exercises of the class of 1905, Edward Little High School, took place last evening in the Elm St. Universalist Church. As usual the church was filled with friends and relatives of those who have completed their four years’ work. Green and white, the class colors, were used extensively about the large auditorium in tasteful and altogether pleasing decorations. Of the 118 who entered the class, 57 graduated. The average age is 17½ years. 19 have definitely decided to enter college and 14 are undecided.

Clarenville, Nfld. – The laying of the world’s first transoceanic telephone cable started today. It is to stretch from this rugged fishing village across the Atlantic’s floor to Oban, Scotland. The Clarenville end of the cable which will span 2,250 statute miles was christened with sea water from Heart’s Content Bay, site of the first successful Atlantic telegraph cable landing near here in 1866. The 8,050-ton British shop Monarch, spinning the cable slowly out of her huge tanks, will reach Oban by the end of the summer.

The Phillips Odd Fellows and Rebekah Club announce a gala celebration here on July 4 and 5 including a first in Maine, the first Maine Gold-Panning Championship. “Prospector Al,” Cheshire, Conn., who has won panning championships in Indiana, New Hampshire, Connecticut and other sections of the country, competing against panners from such gold-hunting meccas as California, Alaska and British Columbia, will be in town for the event.

“Prospector Al” states that both skill and luck are needed to place high in the gold-panning event. Each contestant is given a gravel pan filled with dirt and eight nuggets. Timed by judges with digital watches, the contestant pans his receptacle clean while extracting the nuggets, then shouts, “Gold.”
