BRIDGTON – Beatrice Chapman, 94, of 11 Depot St., Harrison, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, at the Bridgton Hospital.

She was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Maplewood, Mass., out of the love of her parents, Charles F. and Sarah (Cleveland) Berthel.

Following graduation from Melrose High School in 1928, she was employed by the Melrose YMCA.

She married Norman E. Chapman in 1937, and in 1939 they moved to Winthrop. As residents of Maine since then, they also lived in Brewer, Millinocket, and for more than 35 years, in Harrison.

They formed wonderful relationships in each town they lived. They enjoyed the outdoors and were “campers” with their family and friends. She was an avid bridge player for years, until her eyesight made it impossible.

Know as “Bea” to her friends, and “Mimi” or “Mom” to her family, she was an especially gentle, caring, loving person and a longtime friend of Bill W. She gave quiet encouragement and Godly wisdom to those who sat around the table in her family room sipping a cup of coffee, or to those who called her at any hour to ease their hurts. With these attributes, her many friends gravitated to her door. Her home always had visitors.

She had a twinkle in her eye and a giggle in her voice. Her arms would always open wide to greet family, friends and strangers who became friends after that first encounter. Her love and concern for their health and happiness was foremost in her heart. Within her family circle, she was famous for her traditional “Saturday night bean and brown bread suppers,” brownies, pies and all kinds of “goodies” she lovingly prepared.

She was a faithful member of the Calvary Community Church in Harrison, and was active in the past as a deacon and involved in the Women’s Circle for many years.

She was one of those rare, charismatic individuals in life who always helped others feel better about themselves. She was so grateful for her “little house” on Depot Street, and her close-knit and loving neighbors.

Her family, deeply thankful for her life, includes her three children, Ed (Charlane) of Auburn, Dianne Walls (Jim) of Spring Hill, Fla., Don (Jean) of Hollis, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Ned, Bob, Julie, Jeremy, Peter, Amy, Sarah and Amanda; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and numerous spouses and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband; and her two sisters, Irma Spinney and Doris Noseworthy.
