PORTLAND – Howard Blaine Sanborn, 77, died peacefully surrounded by his family on June 22.
He was born in Portland, on Nov. 18, 1927, son of Howard L. and Myrtie (Pike) Sanborn. He graduated from Gould Academy, attended Norwich University and graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1950.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War as a supply officer.
He married Hazel Stoehr in 1947 and together they had two children. They lived in Norway, Cumberland and Falmouth Foreside, and most recently resided at The Atrium, 640 Ocean Ave., Portland.
He was active over the years in the motor carrier industry as chairman and president of Sanborn’s Motor Express, Inc., president of Maine Motor Transport Association, vice president at large of the American Trucking Association, treasurer and member of the board of governors of the Regular Route Common Carriers Conference, chairman and president of the New England Motor Rate Bureau, and director of the Middle Atlantic Rate Conference.
He also served as trustee of Northern New England Benefit Trust, director of Casco Northern Bank, corporator of Maine Medical Center, and director of Transus Inc., Atlanta, Ga. He served as a trustee of Gould Academy from 1988 to 2002. He was currently active in the management of the Sanborn family owned companies, Transport Leasing Corporation and Sanborn Properties.
He is survived by Hazel, his wife of 57 years; daughters, Christine Sanborn Teague of Concord, N.H., and Elizabeth Sanborn Ventre of Cumberland Foreside; brother, Dwight Sanborn of Cumberland Foreside; grandchildren, Reuben, Neal, Daniel, Alexander, Katherine and Blaine; and 19 nieces and nephews.
