LEWISTON – John E. Wood Sr., 85, a resident of Hemlock Street, Sabattus, died Thursday morning, June 23, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was a patient since Tuesday.

He was born in Sabattus, on Oct. 8, 1919, the son of Edward R. and Abbie (Chadbourn) Wood. He graduated from Sabattus High School.

He served in the U.S. Army, in the European Theater in Italy during World War II.

On Oct. 12, 1945, in Sabattus, he married Viola M. Hedlund of Munson, Mass.

He worked for the Lewiston Sun Journal for 47 years in the printing department, retiring in 1985. He also worked as a substitute rural carrier for the United States Postal Service.

He was a member of the South Lewiston Baptist Church and a member of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association. He enjoyed gardening, mountain hiking and other outdoor pursuits.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, of Sabattus; two daughters, Sharon L. Green and her husband, John R., of Sabattus, and Carol C. Sanborn and her husband, Ralph J., of Wales; a son, John E. Wood Jr., and his wife, Mary Lou, of Corning, N.Y.; a sister, Phyllis C. Hall of Sabattus; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard B. Wood; two brothers, Raymond F. and Lester A. Wood; and two great-grandsons, John Richard McLean and Edward Wood.
