PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A rower who collapsed after a victory at a college regatta last month died from dehydration, according to autopsy results released Friday.

Scott Laio, 20, a Boston College junior from Pittsford, N.Y., collapsed May 14 after his crew won the men’s lightweight eight at the Dad Vail Regatta. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he died.

The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office released the autopsy results Friday.

Temperatures reached a high of 80 the day Laio died.

Athletes can typically lose 5 to 10 liters of water during intense exercise and dehydration can occur as a result, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
