Most of the things on Pati Keene’s scavenger hunt list are pretty basic.

Most people should be able to come up with a personalized pad of paper, a Chinese restaurant takeout menu or the front page of Thursday’s Sun Journal.

“I wanted there to be a lot of things people could come up with and stand a good chance,” she said. “But I wanted there to be a couple of doozies.”

Her doozies are a genuine ration stamp from World War II, a Peck’s Department store hatbox or a pocket calendar from 1959.

“I don’t expect anybody to get all three of those,” Keene said. “I’ll be surprised if they get any of them.”

Keene, a volunteer for the March of Dimes, helped organize the summer fund-raiser. It kicks off this weekend at the Auburn Kmart.

Teams pay a $25 entry fee to get the full list of the 203 scavenger items. They have three weeks to find as many as they can and turn them back in.

Items will be rated for difficulty. For example, a mood ring would be worth five points, while a small glow-in-the-dark star is worth 25 points. The three most coveted items, the hatbox, ration stamp and 1959 pocket calendar, are worth 250 points each.

“We’ve tried to set it up with a lot of easy, attainable things,” Keene said. “Even if you don’t get one of the doozies, you can still get a heck of a lot of points.”

Teams will turn in their booty July 16, 17 and 18 at Kmart. The 25 teams with the most points are invited to a spaghetti dinner at the Elks Lodge. The top five winners will be announced there, with a first-place purse of $500 at stake.
