FARMINGTON – Bernard “Bing” and Elizabeth “Lib” Etzel of Farmington mark their 60th wedding anniversary this month. They were married June 16, 1945, in Fairfield. Mr. Etzel had just returned from serving in World War II having received the Purple Heart in active duty.

The couple settled in Farmington and Mr. Etzel purchased his wife’s father’s business, Emery’s Store on Broadway, which he operated for over 25 years. Mrs. Etzel taught at Farmington High School in the 1960s and was active in volunteering at the Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Etzel was active in town government and served as a selectman over several terms. They have enjoyed their retirement years at their home, “Beechwood” on Anson Street in Farmington, where they have lived since 1950, and spend winters at their home in Ft. Myers, Fla.

They have three sons, Alan and his wife, Liisa, and son, Peter, of Helsinki, Finland, David and his wife, Jan, of Naples, Fla., and daughter, Lily, of Portland, Ore., Stephen and his wife, Bethany, and daughter, Tory, of Cape Elizabeth, daughter, Suzy of Milan, Italy, and son, Adam, of Delray Beach Fla.

A surprise celebration in their honor was held April 3 at their winter home in Ft. Myers, Fla. Their family will gather to honor them at their home in Farmington during the week of July 4.
