ORONO – University of Maine baseball coach Paul Kostacopoulos has resigned to become head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, the university announced Saturday.

“This is a great opportunity for Paul,” said Maine Athletic Director Patrick Nero. “He has done a tremendous job with the baseball program at Maine over the past nine seasons.”

In nine years Kostacopoulos compiled a 284-195 record and led Maine to the NCAA tournament this year and in 2002. This year, the Black Bears came within one run of a regional tournament championship, losing in their final game to Oklahoma, 11-10.

Kostacopoulos was named America East Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2001. He previously coached at Providence College, where he led the Friars to NCAA appearances in 1992 and 1995. His overall record in 16 seasons as a head coach is 504-329.

“The tradition of the Maine baseball program leaves us with a very positive outlook,” said Nero. “The search for a replacement will begin immediately and we are excited for the future.”
