ROCKPORT – The Maine Society of Land Surveyors has named Richard Bastow Surveyor of the Year for 2004. Society Secretary Kevin Farrar made the announcement at the annual meeting at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
The award goes to a licensed Maine surveyor who has made significant contributions to the society, the profession of land surveying, the people of the State of Maine and their community. The award goes to a surveyor who has brought honor, dignity and respect for the profession and professional land surveyors. Bastow works for the City of Auburn.
Bastow has worked as a draftsman, site evaluator, surveyor, professional engineer and teacher.
He has been teaching since 1968 at Central Maine Community College where he turned a one-year drafting course into an accredited two-year associate’s degree program which he now chairs.
For the Maine Society of Land Surveyors, Bastow is a charter member, life member, and has held offices as secretary, vice president and president. He served as chairman of the Board of Licensure for Professional Land Surveyors.
Bastow is a member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping and is a past president of the New England Section of ACSM. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
