OTISFIELD – A 21-year-old counselor was injured Monday at Camp Arcadia on Route 121 when a horse fell on top of him during a ride, an Oxford County deputy said.

Cpl. Dane Tripp said Monday that Malcolm B. Mulroney of Colorado went over backward with the horse while riding at about 9:30 a.m.

“The horse started to buck like horses do when they’re in a rodeo, apparently,” Tripp said. He said the animal threw his head forward then reared on his hind legs when Mulroney pulled up on the reins to get control. The pair fell over backward, Tripp said, with Mulroney landing beneath the horse.

Tripp said he was unsure of the severity of Mulroney’s injuries, but the counselor did not appear to be in great pain. “He was conscious, he was talking to people.”

The horse was not injured by the fall.

Casco Rescue first responded to the scene, Tripp said, then contacted PACE Ambulance. Mulroney was transported to the Otisfield Fire Department by PACE, then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center.

According to a hospital spokesman, Mulroney was treated and released Monday.
