A prominent Wood street citizen calls attention to the many unsightly telephone poles along his street. He believes that at least the poles should be placed in an erect position instead of being allowed to lean over as they are in some cases and also that they should be printed. “We take a little pride in the appearance of our street and would like to see this thing remedied. Washington – The signatures of about 20,000 persons who favor the rose as the national flower were presented today to Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-Maine) and Rep. Frances Bolton (R-Ohio), authors of bills for that purpose. The 400-foot scroll of signatures was gathered at flower shows over the country. It was presented to Mrs. Smith in her office by Mrs. Mary Haskins Milholland of Brookville, N.Y., chairman of a committee supporting the rose as the national flower. Mrs. Bolton said that if either of the bills is given a hearing by congressional committees the signatures probably would be offered as evidence of the widespread interest in the legislation.

Maine’s iris growers and fanciers traveled to Auburn recently for the 20th Annual Maine Iris Society Show held at Fairview School. For many growers, Maine’s winter dealt a serious blow to their iris bulbs and this was evident in the smaller turnout by exhibitors for the June show. According to one participant, some growers lost their entire batch of irises. For certain strains of iris, it will take a few years before they again bloom as the beauties anticipated every springtime. However small the show, it drew enthusiasts who exhibited and admired the beautiful flowers.
