SCARBOROUGH (AP) – A thunderstorm packing wind gusts upward of 55 miles per hour roared through southern Maine on Wednesday, knocking down trees and causing flash floods. There was an unconfirmed report of a funnel cloud.

Scarborough suffered the brunt of the damage. Trees were knocked down, power outages were reported and there was flooding on Payne Road and other roadways, said Kate Smith of the Scarborough Police Department.

Radar estimates from the National Weather Service indicate about 4 inches of rain fell in a 1-hour period, said Kirk Apffel, meteorologist based in Gray.

There was an unconfirmed report a funnel cloud near Biddeford, but there was no damage because it did not touch down, Apffel said.

Central Maine Power reported that about 7,300 customers were without electricity as of 6:30 p.m. More than half of the outages were in the Rockland and Portland service areas, said CMP’s Kevin Howes.
