FREEPORT (AP) – Two people were killed and two injured in an early-morning crash Thursday that tied up traffic on Interstate 295.

Four young men from the Portland area were in the car that hit the guardrail along the median, turned sideways and skidded across the highway before hitting trees at about 5:30 a.m., said Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department.

Police said Dawaun Morgain, 21, of South Portland, and Wilfred Omal, of Portland, were killed in the wreck.

Carlos Salgado, 18, and Peter Godwin, both of Portland, were each taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with what McCausland described as bumps and bruises.

Police said Salgado was driving the Neon that crashed. Omal was the only victim not ejected from the car, McCausland said.

Trooper James McCarthy said the four men were returning from Waterville, where they had spent Wednesday night attending parties and visiting nightspots. McCarthy said it was believed Salgado may have fallen asleep before crashing the car. Investigators said each of the passengers was likely asleep at the same time.

Police said early indications are that the Neon was being driven over the 65 mph limit at the time. No charges were filed Thursday, but the Cumberland County District Attorney sent a representative to the scene to begin an investigation.

The accident happened two miles south of the Brunswick line and shut down both southbound lanes for a time. Traffic backed up for two to three miles before vehicles were allowed to continue southward past the crash site.
