NEW SHARON – A Readfield man was injured after his pickup truck drifted over the centerline and collided nearly head-on with a tractor-trailer hauling liquid asphalt Thursday on Route 27, police said.
The tanker truck driver, Ralph Doughty, 58, of Knox, tried to avoid the pickup driven by Jon Glynn, 44, of Readfield, but it kept coming into his lane, Maine State Police Trooper Scott Dalton said Thursday.
Glynn was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Dalton said. A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday that Glynn was treated and released.
The pickup truck “drifted well over the centerline,” Dalton said.
The tractor-trailer was heading north and the pickup truck was heading south when the accident occurred about 10 a.m. near The Turkey Farm about 2 miles from Route 2, the trooper said.
The big rig stopped on the white fog line near the edge of the road in its lane, and the smaller truck came to rest in the center of the road, he said.
None of the asphalt spilled, he said.
The pickup was totaled, Dalton said. He didn’t want to estimate the damage to the tractor-trailer, which was significant to the entire left side, he said.
