PKU is a rare metabolic disorder in which a lack of certain enzymes prevents the body from breaking down protein. Undiagnosed, it can cause severe brain damage in a growing child.
The parents and supporters of children with PKU in Maine are trying to raise money to keep alive a weekend-long support session at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro. The state told parents it will no longer pay for the session.
Locally, Lori Rice of Durham, whose daughter Sarah has PKU, is organizing a charity softball tournament July 9 at Lewiston’s Randall Road fields. The registration deadline is this Saturday.
Organizers hope area fire and rescue department teams will sign up; registration is $10 per player.
For more information, people may call Rice at 926-5405.
