In a moment of honesty rare for the Bush administration, White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card famously told The New York Times that, regarding Bush’s sales job for the war he wanted with Iraq, “You don’t roll out a new product in August.”
Apparently, though, late June is a good time to shill for another administration product: so-called Social Security reform.
In his interview in the Sun Journal, Mr. Card issued what sounds like a veiled threat: “I hope (Sen. Snowe) understands it’s very important we work together to find a solution.”
Fortunately for Sen. Snowe, public opinion is solidly behind her and against Bush’s product. One would hope that the administration would give up this sales job and consider, for example, the problem of failing pension funds, which actually is a crisis.
