HIRAM – A 4-year-old boy was killed Saturday morning when an uprooted tree fell and crushed him, police said.

The boy was playing with his 7-year-old cousin at his great-grandmother’s house when the accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. The boys had been playing nearby as the boy’s uncle was limbing a wind-fallen tree. When the uncle cut its trunk, the stump sprang back upright, crushing the boy who had climbed in the hole made by the tree’s roots, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Dane Tripp said Saturday night. The tree measured about 1½ feet in diameter.

Tripp declined to release the names of any family members. The boy was not a Hiram resident, he said. The 7-year-old cousin had his leg pinned, but managed to free himself, said Tripp, one of the responders to the scene. The 4-year-old boy was later freed and pronounced dead. No charges were filed.

“It was just a very unfortunate accident,” Tripp said.
