BOSTON (AP) – A foster mother accused of killing a 4-year-old boy in her care pleaded innocent to a murder charge Friday.
Corrine Stephen, 24, of Boston was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail at her arraignment on a second degree murder charge in Dorchester District Court. Stephen is accused of killing Dontel Jeffers, a foster child staying with her, after repeatedly abusing him over a five-day period.
Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said Thursday that Stephen caused two major injuries that ultimately led to Dontel’s death on March 6.
Stephen’s attorney did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.
Dontel had been in Stephen’s care for 11 days when he died.
Conley said Dontel’s body had fingernail marks on the forehead, neck and hands, a bruise under the left eye and bruises on the arms. Ligature marks on both wrists were consistent with his having been tied up, possibly with a phone cord found in Stephen’s home, he said.
Conley said evidence suggested the boy was already dead by time he was brought to the emergency room.
Stephen had said she took Dontel to the hospital after finding him unresponsive a day after what she said was an accidental fall.
